THE 2008 SCION NYBB PRO

The 2008 SCION NYBB Pro presented by Verizon Wireless started its waiting period today and was put on hold for a possible epic swell lining up from Hurricane Ike. Even though there was swell on the horizon this morning it was not optimal for the USBA competitors. Event organizer Bob Baldwin opted to put the event on hold until the weekend in hopes for the weather maps to line up to the cuttent hype.

Riders such as Rusty Friesden and Jeff Hubbard have flown into town for the event with a crew of who look to add to the already competitive field. All division of the USBA SCION NYBB PRO will be on call for Saturday morning with a possible on call for Friday if the swell arrives early.

Riders please keep posted to the below sites for updated information and check in times. There are still slots left in all divisions so please email the two below emails to confirm you entry.

SKIPPER TAKES JENKS

THE BODYGLOVE BODYBOARDS USBA TOUR
The 2008 SCION Jenks Pro presented by Verizon Wireless was a huge success today with its final day held at Seaside heights Jenkinson’s Casino Pier. The event was run in front of a 7,000 person crowd lining the beach.
The early rounds saw big names bow out of the event with Willy Petrovick (Big Island HI) being taken out by Ruben Sanchez (Puerto Rico) and Jason Bitzer (NJ) in the first round. Also Drew Erichson was knocked out by a .5 count back in his quarter final which set the tone for interesting semi final rounds with new faces in each heat.
As the tide dropped the surf had started to peak with solid five to six foot sets provided by Hurricane Hana spinning just off the coast of the Bahamas. Quarter final number three saw another upset with Jason Bitzer being knocked out by Tyler Wieman (CA) and David Phillips (Kauai HI). Mid heat Jason assisted a swimmer who was struggling to keep his head above water and seemed to lose his rhythm after handing the victim off to an on duty lifeguard.
Tyler Wieman having two solid heats prior was stopped in the semis by a consistent Jonah Romero (Maui HI) who was flipping his way through his heats. Spencer Skipper (Big Island HI) was on fire and as the tide dropped his stock with judges went up as they watched him spin to roll or spin to back flips on the inside section.
Heading into the Drop Knee rounds, standouts included Dan Worley (FLA), Ryan Rhodes (NC), Jason Bitzer (NJ) and Brian Stoehr (MD) who all had found their way through the quarters, into the semis and finally landing themselves into the final of the Drop Knee Pro division. A stoked Dan Worley came away with the win and valuable points heading into the SCION NYBB Pro. With an all east coast final it was all smiles on the podium as all riders slapped five and were stoked to see all the different locations on the eastern seaboard represented!
Heading back to the Men’s Pro we saw the top riders battle it out in what was an amazing final. Once again we saw Brian Stoehr surf very well all the way to the buzzer landing him the number two spots on the winner’s board. The Romero Brothers who where surfing amazing as always but could not keep up the pace which they found in their earlier heats.. This left Spencer Skipper with an opportunity open the heat up for a kill and kill he did gaining the number one spot using a huge aerial attack on the very punchy and sizable conditions in the final!
Thanks again to the Jenkinson’s,SCION and Verizon staff for their wonderful support of this amazing annual event. Thank you for to the Jenkinson’s staff Marilou, Diana, Toby, Pep, Fred, Al and Tony. Also big thank you goes out to Mike at SCION and Leo, Chris and the Verizon Street team for putting on a great promotion for the fans of Bodyboarding. THE 2008 SCION JENKINSON’S PRO

The first day of the SCION JENKS PRO went off with only one hitch. This being that the swell was missing Jenkinson’s Beach and heading down to the events alternate location in Seaside heights. Seaside Pier which is part of the Jenkinson’s Beach properties was providing a 2-4 ft face swell for the young USBA riders to tear apart.

The started mid morning with light onshores and a dropping tide. A varied national field from Hawaii, California and the Eastcoast turned up for the Amateur Open and 13-18 divisions. Keanu Cazimero from Waimanalo Hawaii came up with a stromg progressing into the semi finals of both divisions. Hot on his heels Sam Kempton(CA) with a solid darkhorse final appearance.

A disappointed Taylor Paige (CA) was taken out of both division only making it to one semi in the Open Amateur. Dillon Druz (NJ) once again came up with a solid performance with a dual final appearance. Rob Mack (NJ) made the final as well in the 13-18 division making it a back to back affair for his last two events. Chris Dettlinger followed up with a great showing in Open Amateur division all the way through the final.
The next day of competition looks to be Monday with all Pro riders on call through from Sunday on for a possible SE tropical swell from named storm Hana.
More to come and please check the tentative schedules for event promotional parties and free bodyboarding clinics with the USBA’s top pro riders!

NEW JERSEY BEACH CLOSED

Jersey beach closed after reports of medical waste find-
1:29 PM EDT, August 28, 2008
Another beach in southern New Jersey has been closed today after receiving reports of more medical waste found on the beach — this time in Ocean City.
Ocean City officials at a lifeguard station said the 38th Street beach was closed while they investigate a report of medical waste found on the beach.
Avalon was forced to close beaches Tuesday for the third time since the weekend after medical waste, including hypodermic needles and cotton swabs, washed ashore.
A report in The Press of Atlantic City says the two incidents appear to be unrelated. It said the Ocean City beaches between 38th and 40th streets were closed after lifeguards found two hypodermic needles at 39th Street.
According to police scanner reports out of Cape May County, a hazardous materials team, the fire department and other agencies are on scene cleaning up the materials.
Beaches in Avalon reopened yesterday after workers and volunteers searched the sand Tuesday night and yesterday morning without finding any hazardous materials.

THE SPORT CHALET CA REGIONAL TOUR HUNTINGTON BEACH PRO

The final day for the Sport Chalet HB Pro was held in similar conditions as yesterday, showcasing however, the talent of the up and coming US bodyboarders in the Amateur Open and Amateur 13-18.
Kauai native, Travis Smith, was a standout in the Amateur 13-18 throughout the competition, finishing in 1st. Victor Packpour of California, followed Smith and placed 2nd with Hunter Fedden and Dillan Druz, both from California, placing 3rd and 4th respectively. Rocket Klein, the events youngest competitor at age 11, shows that age is not an indicator of talent in the USBA, as he progressed to the semis in a division above his age group.

Trophy’s and prizes for the finalists

Heading into the most competitive Amateur event seen this weekend. The Open Amateur division was nothing short of a battle to the finish, with all the top names from around the nation making there way to the finals. Reis Yonehiro, who was surfing well with the moderate conditions, placed 4th in the finals, ending his all day run of 1st place heat finishes. Taylor Paige ended with a solid finish in 3rd, backing up his IB Pro win. Drew Anderson, making the finals with smooth combos and solid surfing, placed 2nd to current USBA Dillan Druz of New Jersey. Druz was ripping the Open divisions final after a slow but steady earlier rounds. Druz said in an interview with Manny Vargas that he was stoked to win outside of the Northeast, especially California and is amped to have the riders from all over the USBA regions try and take down the NJ locals at next week Jenks Pro. Always the promoter of good competition, Dillan is looking forward to the challenge to defending his Jenks Pro title in NJ at the Jenks Pro.

For the DK Pro California rippers where showing up the traveling pros in the early rounds with Alex and Nick Gero both styling their way into the Semis. Both brothers where stopped heading into the finals leaving Jake Minehan and Joe Grodzen as the two California’s left in the contest. Joe Grodzen did not skip a beat and had a great time working his way to second place with Jake just behind him with a third place overall finish. A very polished attach by Maryland’s Brian Steorh was tarnish in the final with a forth place finish but will leave Brian in a good position as the tour heads back east for next leg of the tour. David Hubbard pumped and snapped his way to another DK and as he heads to Portugal and Spain to chase down the IBA DK world title once again he has a safe bet to possibly winning another USBA DK Pro Championships with two solid results on tour so far.

DK finalists had their work cut out for them

The Women of the USBA where not one step behind the men at the Sport Chalet HB pro with some amazing rides going down in their heats. Lone Amateur Marcela Mureb Bingham once again had a good showing in her second appearance making it to the final and two prior heats with ease ending up the forth position overall. Next inline was Monica DelAmore with a solid all-day performance. Aki Ogure once again put on a solid display leaving her in the 2nd position for the day. But it was Keila Grodzen with hard bottom turns to lip maneuvers that brought her home the win at the HB Pro.

Women’s heat had some gems coming through

Congratulations to all riders and we will see you at the Jenks Pro this next weekend August 28-Sept 1st.

JUBB INTERVIEW

The Sport Chalet HB Pro has some amazing talent attending this weekend. The likes of Jeff Hubbard and Legendary Stand up bodyboard Chris Won Taloa will be on hand along with style master Spencer Skipper. With all this talent we wanted to find out what has provoked these riders to take time out of the busy schedules to make the Sport Chalet HB Pro!
To do this we caught up with Jeff Hubbard on his way back from a big result in Chile, placing # 2 to 6x World Champ Guilherme Tamega.
USBA: So how does it feel coming off another big event in Chile, the waves looked epic, are you pumped on another good result on the world tour?
I am stoked that we got great waves and I made the finals. I am trying to get as many solid results as possible so I can win another world title.

USBA: You are heading to the HB Pro rather then chase down the IBA Soplena event in Spain, what maid you make this decision to stay in the US and compete prior to heading back on tour?
Yes the HB pro is going to be a lot of fun and I am looking forward to it. The USBA events are important to me since they are here at home and help to promote the sports here in the USA. At the beginning of the year I told myself that I was doing the world tour on my terms, meaning I was only going to do the events with the best waves (Chile, Pipe, Shark island and Canaries or the ones with the most money $40k and above (Sintra and Bahia). These are the most fun contest to do and they get me motivated to go out and push myself.
USBA: You have really supportive sponsors and have just picked up another great company Ocean Current ….. Yes, Ocean Current is great company that is really looking to plant some roots and give back to the sport and their customers. So far they are doing every thing right by supporting athletes and sponsoring USBA events. Look for more exciting things from this growing company and check them out at www.oceancurrent.com.
USBA: What are you goals for 08/09 both on the IBA and the USBA. It seems you brother is nipping at your toes, do you aim to three peat this year and
how do you feel about your chances with another world title in the immediate future?
My goals are to win both the USBA and IBA World tour this year. The year is half way over and I have a lot of work to do ahead of me but I am surfing well, having fun with it all and focused on the tasks ahead.

USBA: We will be catching up with you at the contest, so for good luck and will see you in HB!
